Best Experience as a Fan

February 16th 2009

Q. As a sports business consultant, you likely attend many sporting events. What’s the best fan experience you’ve had so far this year?

A. Just last week, prior to the NBA All-Star break, I had the opportunity to attend the Jazz-Lakers game, and it was an excellent overall experience.

I enjoyed the pre-, in-, and post-game events, promotions, game, entertainment, and customer service.

The NCAA Tournament versus NBA Playoffs

April 28th 2008

Q. In your job, you likely follow both the NCAA Basketball Tournament as well as the NBA Playoffs.  Which do you prefer as a fan and why?

A. That’s a great question since I genuinely enjoy each of them.

I also have a similar feeling with golf and other events I have the opportunity to do. Friends and associates will inevitably hear me say, “I’m just happy to be here,” even after slicing a ball into the woods. I enjoy the opportunity to attend any sporting event, and especially enjoy the opportunity to play most sports. (more…)

New or Unique Fan Experience

December 3rd 2007

Q. What have you viewed as a new or unique game promotion so far this basketball season?

A. At the conclusion of the singing of the National Anthem (a 9-year-old who was fantastic), an Anaheim Arsenal (an NBA Development League team) staff member presented the 9-year-old singer with an NBA D-League basketball that was signed to her and autographed by the players and coaches; a real nice gesture by the Arsenal.

Drum Corps at Football

May 18th 2007

Q. As a sports fan, I have always enjoyed the drums and percussion section at college football and basketball games. I’ve noticed a growing trend among NBA basketball teams who now have a drum line or drum corps.  Why hasn’t the NFL picked up on this?

A. The popularity of a drum line or drum corps has reached the NFL. The Chicago Bears have the Drum Corp, which is presented by the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps of Rosemont, Illinois.

Offer Pictures Like Amusement Parks

May 17th 2007

Q. Whenever me and my family go to Disneyland, Disney World or a local amusement park, they usually have staff members near the entrance of the park taking our family’s picture. We the have the option to purchase the picture (or pictures, key chains and other items) at the end of the day. Have any sports teams picked up on this?

A. The Boston Red Sox are one team that offers Fan Photos on its website.  It’s a neat fan feature, opportunity to not only engage fans and increase revenue, but it’s also a great strategy to capture fan information.

The Investment of Inflatable Games

May 4th 2007

Q. We’re debating internally whether or not inflatable games, tunnels, and an inflatable mascot would be worth us spending money on as an athletic department. What are your thoughts?

A. While working in college athletics several years ago, we made an investment on inflatable tunnels for basketball, soccer and volleyball. (more…)

Fan Appeal of Gymnastics and Volleyball

April 5th 2007

Q. Why do you think women’s collegiate gymnastics and volleyball commonly draw more fans than women’s basketball at most colleges that offer these three sports?

A. I’ve always felt the fan appeal for college gymnastics and volleyball is the fact both sports are not as common to kids and adults. (more…)

“Wow” Experience at a Sporting Event

January 8th 2007

Q. When was the last time you had a “Wow” experience at a sporting event and what made you say, “Wow?”

A. Last week, our youngest daughter and I attended a basketball game. That alone for me is a “wow” moment, because of all the sporting events I attend, the ones with my kids or the family are the ones I enjoy most.

Before the game, we went to the concession stand and we were greeted by the friendly lady behind the counter. She asked my daughter, “What would you like cutie?” My daughter smiled and provided her order. “How about you young fella,” she asked. Of course I smiled and then communicated my order.

It was evident this person enjoyed her job and interaction with people, and little doubt fans enjoyed their interactions with her.

As she handed us our order, we thanked her and started to walk away when she said, “Enjoy the game young lady!” My daughter looked back, smiled and said, “thank you.” I thanked her as well and appreciated her enthusiasm, which only added to our overall experience that evening.

Sporting Events I’d Like to Experience

June 27th 2006

Q. Over the years, you’ve no doubt have traveled to a lot of places to watch sporting events.  I’m sure you have your favorites, but I won’t ask you to name those.  Instead, what sporting events or places haven’t you experienced that you would like to over the next few years?

A. First – and I never thought I’d say this while growing up – but I’d have to go with a NASCAR event.  I’ve never been to a NASCAR race. I’m fascinated by the fan access to drivers just before they climb in their cars to race (can you imagine the same access in other major sporting events?) and impressed by the innovative marketing NASCAR has maintained over the years.

The second sporting event I’d like to experience in the next few years would be a Cubs ballgame at Wrigley Field with my family one weekday mid-afternoon during the summer.

And finally a third event I’d like to experience, although I’m not sure it’s going to happen during the “next few years” would be watching the Cubs play for Major League Baseball’s World Series.  Thanks to the Red Sox, I still hope it happens in my lifetime.  If not, hopefully one of my kids has the opportunity to witness the event…or maybe one of my grandkids…better yet, all of us together!
