Take Our Daughters to Work Day

April 11th 2007

Q. What do you recommend a sports team do to leverage Take Our Daughter to Work Day on Thurs., April 26?

A. First, I’d recommend you consider changing the event to “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day,” which is actually what the day is officially called and you can read more about its 15-year anniversary here.

The “Take Our Daughters and Sons Day” website features a variety of programs and tips to plan your activities.

Replacing Midnight Madness

October 26th 2006

Q. Most colleges have gone away from Midnight Madness. What are colleges doing to replace Midnight Madness to tip off the year?

A. Some teams have chosen to host men’s and women’s basketball Fan Fests, as Boise State will do tonight, and others have hosted open practice events, fan days, tip-off luncheons, and other fan-friendly events.

Pre-Selected Songs for Sports Events

October 24th 2006

Q. Do you recommend sports teams pre-select the songs they play – whether a team uses a pep band or sound machine during time outs – or go with whatever the atmosphere calls for in a game?

A. I’m a planner, so I encourage teams to pre-select the music for pre-game, in-game, timeouts and post-game. With that said, you will want to remain flexible and have an alternate song list prepared and readily available to use when your team goes on a run and you’d like to play a high-energy song versus, for example, going with a public address announcement you originally had scheduled for a timeout.

Sharing Half-time Entertainment Expenses

August 18th 2006

Q. What are your thoughts on collaborating half-time entertainment expenses with other college athletic departments and/or professional sports teams?

A. I like the idea and have done this on a number of occasions. It’s a great way to negotiate a packaged price with the half-time performers (note: not all will provide a discount), and share expenses or trade agreements on airline tickets, overnight accommodations, meals and ground transportation.

Titans Mascot Sacks Saints Quarterback

August 15th 2006

Q. Did you see or read about the Tennessee Titans mascot running into a Saints player? If so, what are your thoughts on this game ops snafu?

A. I did read about the Titans mascot running into a Saints quarterback with a golf cart last weekend. These incidents can be avoided with excellent staff communication and by ensuring that all on-field promotions conclude before players step on the field. It’s great to have your mascot entertain fans when the ball isn’t in play, but there’s a place and time, and the playing field should be off limits to mascots and the event promotions staff once the players have exited the locker room and head for the field.

Encouraging Fans to Arrive Early

June 12th 2006

Q. For most of our athletic events, our season ticket holders and fans arrive just before or immediately following the start of a game. What strategy would you recommend to entice or encourage our fans to arrive earlier?

A. The Miami University Athletics Department has done a great job of creating a Game Day Experience prior to its home football games and offers free parking to fans that arrive at least three hours prior to kickoff.  This has proven to be an effective strategy for encouraging RedHawks fans to arrive early.

You can read more about the Miami’s Game Day Experience, which includes the Family Fun Fest and Miami Gardens here.
