Taking The Next Step In Sports Career

May 25th 2009

Q. You have a lot of experience in the sports business industry. I am ready to make the next step in my career to try to move into a sales position with a Major League team. Would you have any advice on best practices other than places like Teamwork? I have begun to network with all of my connections. Is this the best way?

A. A great question and I appreciate you asking it.  In true consulting fashion, I have some questions as well.

What sports business groups and networks are you connected to and how are you engaging, sharing and learning in each of those groups and networks?

As a member of several groups and networks, I know each of the members want to (more…)

The Privilege of Working in Sports

February 11th 2008

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. I enjoy every aspect of what I have the opportunity to do daily, and for me, working in sports is more of a “privilege” than a “job.”

What I enjoy most are the people I’ve worked with over the years; the opportunities I‘ve had to teach and learn each day; and the unique opportunities my family and I have enjoyed together as a result of working in sports.

Baseball Manager Ejected From Game

June 6th 2007

Q. I’m sure you’ve viewed the video by now of the manager being ejected in a game.  Was that all show or a spontaneous act?

A. I did see the video a few times – once online and then on television – and it looks to be fairly well thought out. You can access the online video of the manager’s antics here.

Husky Transforms into a Cougar

April 25th 2007

Q. You follow women’s basketball, and formerly were at the University of Washington, so what did you think of June Daugherty’s move to the Cougars after being fired by the Huskies?

A. My first reaction was “wow.”  Any time a coach makes a transition to the rival school, it’s a tough move for all involved, but especially for the coach who has to return to her old school to play in front of a raucous crowd. (more…)

College Sports Versus Professional Sports

April 9th 2007

Q. What area of expertise would you recommend going into, collegiate or professional?  I know you have experience with both, and if I could do something like that, I think it would be ideal.  But, with that said, which level have you enjoyed the most?

A. This is one of those questions I couldn’t possibly answer for you and one you will need to find out for yourself.  It really just depends on what you enjoy and what you would like your day-to-day experiences to be.  Personally, I enjoy both for different reasons. (more…)

Working in Sports

March 7th 2007

Q. I enjoy sports and I would enjoy working in sports every day. As a sports fan that lives and breaths sports daily, I have to ask, how do you enjoy working in sports every day? Is the grass greener on the other side or is working in sports really as good as most people think?

A. There’s no question I have what many consider – including me – an incredible opportunity each day to work in a profession I enjoy tremendously.

It is fun and the people are really what make my job and the experiences fun.

If I Didn’t Work in Sports

March 5th 2007

Q. What would you be doing if you weren’t working in sports?

A. Wow, a great question and one I haven’t put a great deal of thought into because I’ve been involved in sports in one way or another all my life.

I’d enjoy working with kids in a camp setting. I have a lot of fond memories growing up and attending various camps. I learned a great deal, had a lot of fun, and I’d enjoy being able to provide similar experiences to youth.

The Ultimate Sports Job

October 2nd 2006

Q. What would you consider the ultimate sports job?

A. The one that makes you happy.

I don’t believe it matters if you’re working in sports or not. If you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, you need to find something you enjoy doing every daily. To me, if you get excited going to work and coming home from the office, you have the ultimate job.

Where to Search for Sports Jobs

June 2nd 2006

Q. Where can I get started in my search for a job in sports?

A. If you’re interested in a job in collegiate sports, I’d start with ncaasports.org. If professional sports are where you’d like to find a job, teamworkonline.com is a terrific online resource.
