Most of you likely have never heard of Winona State University – the defending NCAA Division II men’s basketball champions.

Winona State is located in Winona, Minn., a few hours from the Twin Cities and where I began my career in sports as the school’s first women’s athletics media relations director.

As a Winona State Alumnus, I’m glad to see the Warriors off to another great start in men’s hoops this season. WSU is 19-0 and has won 41 consecutive games dating back to early January of 2006.

The Division II record for consecutive wins is 52 and was achieved from 1943 to 1946 by Langston (Okla.).

Two other Division II teams – Central Missouri and Bentley (Mass.) – are also undefeated this season.

Winona State has a shot to tie the 52-win record if they can remain undefeated through the Northern Sun Conference Tournament.

I probably should have waited until after the season to write about WSU’s improbable win streak, but I’m just like that giddy child on Christmas day and quite surprised I lasted this long without writing a blog post.
