Down seven points with 45 second left in the 2007 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship, Barton College (NC) capped its comeback with a steal and lay-up as the final horn sounded to end Winona State’s record 57-game winning streak.

It was an amazing finish as Barton outscored the defending National Champion Warriors 10-1 to win the its first National Championship. (more…)

I read the quote below by William James for the first time today and thought I’d share it in today’s blog post. It’s definitely appropriate for my long distance running, but it’s also a great message for seeing our dreams through and not giving up too soon.

So many times – just like when we start to hurt or get winded during a long run – we slow down, stop and call it a day. When we make this decision, we only cheat ourselves. This quote is a great reminder to keep running until we catch our second wind.

“Most people never run far enough on their first wind to find out they’ve got a second. Give your dreams all you’ve got and you’ll be amazed at the energy that comes out of you.”

I recently read a quote: “What could be more important in life than to know in our hearts that in everything we have tried to do, we have done our very best.”

Do you coast or give your most?

When it comes to effort, each of us holds the keys.

Do you naturally go the extra mile? Do you make an extra effort, or do that extra something for someone? Are you someone who continually strives to do a little more than what people expect you to do?

If going the extra mile is common practice for you, you’ve likely experienced great success, and as Roger Staubach once said, “There are no traffic jams along the extra mile.”

Look for opportunities to go the extra mile each day and you’ll be on the fast track to success.

As a consultant, coach and mentor to sports executives I have the pleasure of working with some extremely gifted individuals who are passionate about their work and achieving success.

I also have opportunities to work with extremely gifted individuals who – for whatever reason – are not self-motivated and settle on being average even though their abilities could lead them to greatness.

We’ve all witnessed this first hand. Some people simply show up, put in their time, and are satisfied with average results.

Of course, this is an individual’s choice. Some people simply choose not to put forth the consistent effort necessary to achieve excellence.

I’ve always struggled to understand how someone with incredible talent could choose to be content not utilizing their talent versus someone who may not be as talented, but is determined to maximize his or her abilities to achieve beyond anyone’s expectations.

Those are the people I enjoy working with most…the person who – no matter what their talent level is and no matter what the circumstances present – gives their best effort every day, every play.
