It was a great sports day yesterday with both the Chicago Cubs and da Bears winning their respective games, but what made yesterday a “great” sports day was seeing the WNBA celebrate its 11th season by crowning the Phoenix Mercury the 2007 WNBA Champions.

The Championship was played In the “Motor City, ” but it was the Mercury who had their motor running on all cylinders. It was clear from the tip to the final horn the Mercury was determined to seize their opportunity to bring the Championship trophy to Phoenix.

Equally impressive in the decisive Game 5 was the game atmosphere, as over 20, 000 fans packed The Palace. Along with it being the first Championship for Phoenix, it was the first time in the league’s 11-year history the visiting team won the Championship.

The Shock, who came into the game as the defending Champions – and who also winners of the 2003 Championship – made a game of it with about four minutes to go, but the Finals MVP, Cappie Pondexter, was unstoppable down the stretch.

The Mercury’s Head Coach Paul Westhead is no stranger to Championships, as he was the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers who won the 1980 NBA Championship with Pat Riley as his assistant coach.

Congratulations to the Mercury on winning their first WNBA Championship, the Detroit for another great season under Head Coach Bill Liambeer, and to the WNBA as they now prepare for what I know will be an exciting 12th season.
