It’s Time to Go Green in Houston

March 10th 2008

The Houston Rockets have followed other professional sports teams and created “It’s Time to Go Green” environmental awareness campaign they are implementing throughout the month of March.

The Rockets have teamed with Waste Management as a presenting sponsor of the campaign, and Rockets forward Shane Battier and guard Aaron Brooks will join the University of Houston Environmental Club, HLS Enterprises, the Parks & Recreation Department, the Boys & Girls Club (Key Stone Club), Friends of Emancipation Park, AsakuraRobinson Associates and Gregg Elementary to plant trees in Emancipation Park as part of the “Keep Houston Beautiful” campaign.

The Rockets are also planning to “Adopt-the-Park” from the Houston Parks and Recreation Department to keep the city’s streets clean for one year.

The Rockets also found a creative way to involve one of its largest corporate partners (Toyota) to promote the use of hybrid cars. Fans can test-drive hybrid cars at Toyota dealerships and receive a ticket voucher to the Rockets’ “Environmental Awareness Game” on Mar 24.  Also, any fans that drive their hybrid cars to the game on Mar 24 will be able to park for free.

The Campaign also includes a contest fans can enter to win prizes; the opportunity for fans to bring their recycled goods to the Mar 24 game; and the game program for the “Environmental Awareness Game” will be printed on recycled paper.
