Transition from Paper to eCards

November 3rd 2008

If you presently do not utilize ecards, I encourage you to explore the many benefits of utilizing the technology of online electronic cards versus the standard paper cards.

The trend these days is more and more people are using ecards and there are many benefits.  Some of the benefits include the variety and customization of ecards; the quick and efficient use of time; no postage or tracking expenses; and ecards can be post-dated to be sent on a specific date and time. Thank Your Volunteers

September 15th 2008

Today’s Telios Tip is a simple one, but one that is often overlooked.

I recently came across a newspaper advertisement that not only served as a “Thank You” to the event sponsors, but it thanked each of the event committee members and the volunteers. (more…)

Teen Driving Academy

September 8th 2008

The Miller Performance Training Center is offering a “Teen Driving Academy.”

I first learned of the Academy while reading the newspaper.  The advertisement caption read: “Give your teen the gift that will keep on giving for a lifetime.”

This is a terrific example of being creative during when your sports facility is not hosting a sporting event.  Sports teams have similar opportunities with all their facilities, and it’s not only a great strategy for generating additional revenue, but also tying in tickets to a future home event. Use Google Alerts

August 18th 2008

If you don’t presently use Google Alerts, I encourage you to check out how easy it is to set up Google Alerts, which delivers an email to you as frequently as you’d like each day with stories and blogs published on any subject you choose.

I’ve been using Google Alerts for a few years now and have found them to be the most efficient way for me to keep up with stories, trends and best practices.

Stamps You Can Use Forever

July 28th 2008

Stamp prices have increased over the years, and each time they do, people are forced to purchase additional stamps to supplement the old stamps value to meet the increased price of a stamp.

Did you know you could purchase stamps today that will be good forever? It’s true. (more…)

Tagliabue’s Five Lessons for Success

February 11th 2008

Former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue’s five Lessons for Success:

1. If it ain’t broke, fix it anyway. I used to say if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Guess what? Anything can be made better.

2. Learn from others outside of sports. Young people always ask me how they can have a career in sports. I always say, go to work in another business sector: telecom, banking, collective bargaining as an attorney. Stay out of sports until you acquire some skills. Acquire some perspective and experience and bring it to sports. (more…)

Restaurants Now Rewarding for Loyalty

October 8th 2007

While on a business trip in Colorado, I was provided with a brochure with my meal that featured information on a loyalty rewards program that sounded a lot like an airlines frequent flyer program.

The restaurant group, which includes four different restaurants in various cities, has created a rewards program that offers various gift cards, bottles of wine, express seating, a personal chef experience, and special events at restaurants for points accumulated by customers. (more…)

Pre-Order and Save

September 24th 2007

I received an email from Barnes & Noble, which I’m a member of the Reader’s Advantage Program they offer – a loyalty program – and in the “This Week at Barnes& Noble” was a “pre-order” offer for Joel Osteen’s “Become a Better You” book that will be released on Oct 15.

This is a neat idea any sports team or college athletics department could offer its most loyal fans who are subscribed to its eNewsletter.  Whether it’s a “pre-order” or Early Bird Special, why not offer your season ticket holders, group leaders, donors and/or eNewsletter subscribers the opportunity to receive a specially discounted price prior to the general public receiving the “regular-price” offer a few weeks later?

Why I Like You

June 4th 2007

Zig Ziglar conducts a “Born to Win” seminar where I’ve been informed Zig asks participants to recognize each by pairing up and completing the statement, “I like you because…”

This is a great exercise for showing people we care and appreciate them, and I would encourage you to find a way to incorporate something similar into one of your upcoming staff meetings.

Propose Solutions When Problems Arise

May 8th 2007

How many times have you been in a staff meeting and inevitably someone raises their hand and shares a problem they see with your business team or with your business in general?

It happens all too often, and I don’t mind the fact that someone raises their hand and shares a problem s(he) sees or is experiencing, but I do get frustrated when a person shares a problem and fails to share a solution. (more…)

Always Be Recruiting All-Stars

April 16th 2007

I’ve heard associates say “You should always be recruiting,” but recently I finally internalized this best business practice and felt motivated to pass it along to you.

Don’t wait until a staff member leaves or until you’re forced to make a staffing change to start looking for the next super star. Instead, recruit every day. (more…)

Don’t Share Confidential Information

April 9th 2007

I’m amazed how many people choose to discuss in a normal to loud voice a company’s business problem (or the results of a meeting they just had) while sitting on a plane getting ready to take off.

It happens more often than businesses would like and it surprises me people don’t use more discretion while talking on a cell phone aboard a packed plane. (more…)

Take Time to Review, Reflect & Reinvest

February 23rd 2007

What do you do when you finish a sales meeting with a prospective client?  Jump back in your car and head back to the office, moving on to the next project at hand, returning email messages from your Blackberry, or returning voice mail messages you received while in the meeting?

All those things are important, but before you move on to those tasks, I encourage you to review and reflect on what just took place.  What did you do well, what could you improve, and if you were in the position of the person you just met with, what would be his or her takeaways from your meeting? Be the Best You Can Be

January 18th 2007

Today’s Telios Tip is an observation from Bill Walton, who says his former basketball coach, the legendary John Wooden, taught him a lot more than basketball: “The skills he taught us on the court – teamwork, personal excellence, discipline, dedication, focus, organization, and leadership – are the same tools that you need in the real world. He wasn’t teaching us about basketball, he was teaching us about life. John Wooden taught us how to focus on one primary objective: Be the best you can be in whatever endeavor you undertake.”

Give Words of Sincere Appreciation

January 16th 2007

Today’s Telios Tip comes from Dale Carnegie who once said: “You have it easily in your power to increase the sum total of this world’s happiness now. How? By giving a few words of sincere appreciation to someone who is lonely or discouraged. Perhaps you will forget tomorrow the kind words you say today, but the recipient may cherish them over a lifetime.”

Shovel Your Own Snow

December 14th 2006

As the cold temperatures and snow sweep through the Rocky Mountains, today’s tip comes from a quote I once read that said: something to the effect of “Sweep the snow from your own front door before you complain about the frost on your neighbor’s tiles.”

Happy Shoveling!

Gift Cards Are Everywhere

December 12th 2006

I learned long ago it’s easier and likely makes my wife happier when I give her gift cards versus making the attempt to pick out clothing and other items I think she’ll like for the holidays.

In yesterday’s Question of the Day blog post I answered a question about gift cards, and it seems every time I turn around a business is offering a gift card – restaurants, convenient stores, retail stores and today, I received an email from Ticketmaster who is also offering a Ticketmaster gift cards with the slogan “Give the gift of live entertainment.”

Gift cards as well as gift certificates for tickets, merchandise, concessions and other items is a great opportunity not only during the holidays, but year-round.

Tell Someone Thank You Today

November 23rd 2006

So many people touch our lives in special ways each day, and in this fast-paced world we live in, many times we don’t take the time to stop and give thanks and recognition to those who’ve touched us, or gone the extra mile so we could win.

I encourage to take a moment to reflect on all the special people – friends, family, associates, a teacher or coach from years past – who have reached out and helped you in some way (big or small) so that you could win. A simple “thanks” could make their day, and possibly impact them in a big way.

If you’re one of the many people who took the time for me along the way, I say thank you for your time – one of our most precious gifts - and mentorship, and most of all, your friendship.

To those I’ve yet to have the pleasure to meet and work with, I hope we meet soon. It would be my pleasure to pass on to you what others have graciously passed on to me.

Have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!

Review and Learn From All You Do

November 22nd 2006

I’m a strong believer in evaluations.

During on site sales training with clients, we go through role play exercises and I like to go with sales executives on sales calls to test drive the techniques and strategies we’ve discussed and learned during our training.

Following each role play and meeting, we discuss what we did well, what we didn’t do well, and what we could improve for the next role play or meeting.

This evaluation process is easy to do and one I encourage everyone to consider for all business areas and events in an effort to continually learn and improve.

Follow Up and Follow Through

August 28th 2006

One of the quickest ways someone could standout among the rest is by simply following up and following through on a consistent basis.

It sounds easy, and most times it is. However, I don’t believe most people do this on a regular and consistent basis. In fact, I believe a larger percentage of people are not consistent with their follow up and follow through. Most people have good intensions and would like to be known as someone who always follows up and follows through, but the reality is that many people are not good finishers.

Are you a finisher - one who follows up and follows through consistently - each and every day, each and every project?

If you want to standout among the crowd, be a finisher and I guarantee you’ll stand out among the crowd.

Keep It Simple

August 14th 2006

I always tell people I like to keep things simple. That’s just me, fairly simple.

As Philip Crosby once said, “No one can remember more than three points.”

So today, try to keep it simple.

Make a Lasting Impression Today

August 10th 2006

“A business handshake is an essential selling technique to make a lasting impression. The first move you make when meeting your prospective client is to put out your hand. There isn’t a businessperson anywhere who can’t tell you that the good business handshake should be a firm one. Yet time and again people offer a limp hand to the client. To have a good business handshake, position your hand to make complete contact with the other person’s hand. Once you’ve connected, close your thumb over the back of the other person’s hand and give a slight squeeze. You’ll have the beginning of a strong business relationship.” – Lydia Ramsey

Look for People Doing Things Right

August 8th 2006

Do you find fault in others? How often do you actually look for people doing things right?

Isn’t it just as easy to find someone doing something right as it is to find someone doing something wrong?

It seems like the “American way” is to find and criticize people when they make a mistake versus catching that person before they fall, or helping someone who has made a mistake.

What if we put more emphasis on finding and rewarding people who are doing things right?

Billy Martin once said, “There’s nothing greater in the world than when somebody on the team does something good, and everybody gathers around to pat him on the back.”

Today, let’s try to catch as many people as we can who are doing things right and give each of them a pat on the back.

The Spirit of Giving

May 5th 2006

I’ve always had the desire and enjoy finding opportunities to give.

This is easy to do and there are usually a lot of ways - each and every day - to help someone, or to do something special or out of the ordinary for someone.

I’m sure a lot people enjoy giving and assisting others as much as I do - whether it involves family, friends, or associates - it’s a lot of fun and all involved feel good.

I’ve met a lot of neat and special people over the years who are exceptional givers and who’ve impacted me in significant ways with their giving spirit.

I hope you’ve had similar experiences impact you as these experiences have impacted me throughout the years.

In the spirit of passing on what others have passed on to you, it would be neat  - for those who don’t already make this a part of their every day activity - if you could find at least one way each day to give to others who can’t do a thing for you. See how good you feel as a result.

I didn’t always do this on a daily basis, but one time it did happen to me, and I’ll never forget that first time it did. I was motivated that very moment to do the same in hopes of having that same positive impact on others as this person had on me that day.

You likely will find this to be one of the most gratifying things you do each day, if not the most gratifying part of your day. I know I certainly have enjoyed it - especially the little things that seem to mean so much to others.

Enjoy the spirit of giving and have an awesome day!

NCAA Tournament Brings a Lot of Work

March 18th 2006

With all the hoopla over the NCAA Basketball Tournament, many are not aware of the excitement surrounding hockey championships around the country.

Likewise, so many of the Division I tournaments receive the media exposure, and we often don’t hear about NCAA Division II and III championships happening in both basketball and ice hockey.

Here’s an article on some of the work that goes on behind the scenes well before the puck drops for the NCAA Division III Ice Hockey Championships:

NCAA Division III Men’s Hockey Championships

Your turn to take a shot!

Is there anything you’ve learned from the NCAA events that may assist you during the regular season with improving your business operations?
