Be a Team Player Reading Contest

January 30th 2007

In yesterday’s post, I wrote about Scholastic and its Read and Rise program, and while researching this program, I came across a great example of a reading initiative the Utah Jazz and Scholastic have partnered to offer local schools called, “Be a Team Player Reading Contest.”

The program – which started Jan 12 and concludes Feb 12 – provides students with reading tracking sheets each week to keep track of their reading and the top 12 schools will be rewarded with a Utah Jazz player coming to visit their school.

The school will also receive an ice cream party sponsored by a local ice cream company. Parents are asked to sign the reading note with the number of pages the children read day during the contest and the children turn in the tracking sheets each of the four weeks during the contest.

As suggested yesterday, a sports team could develop a very similar program and honor the kids at one of their home games, or as the Jazz have done, honor the top 12 schools with a player (or coach) visit at the schools. It would be neat to do both and offer the kids complimentary admission to a game, and specially discounted tickets to the educators, families and friends of the reading contest participants.
