Create Store Traffic with Online Coupons
June 29th 2007
The Indiana Pacers offer a $15 Off Dick’s Sporting Goods Coupon on its website.
This is a great strategy for driving store traffic to your corporate partner locations, and may even help the Indiana sell more Pacers merchandise.

June 27th 2007
The Indiana Pacers conduct a Fan of the Game contest where Pacers fans have the opportunity to enter a contest where one lucky fan is chosen to be introduced before tip-off of a home game. The fan also receives a T-shirt, hat and game tickets.
This is not only a great game promotion to engage fans, but a great strategy for building a database of super fans.

Trade in Dad’s Ugly Tie
June 22nd 2007
My wife was reading the newspaper and shared with me a neat promotion a local donut shop conducted last week leading up to Father’s Day. As she read it aloud, I thought it could easily be altered by a sports team and conducted any time during the year, or possibly when a team offers Daddy-Daughter Day ticket specials. (more…)
Valued Customer of Delta
June 21st 2007
I received an email from Delta addressed, “Dear Valued Customer.” When I receive an email like this from a company as big as Delta – which is intended to show me all the positive changes Delta has made – it’s hard for me to feel Delta truly “values” my business when they address me as “”Valued Customer” instead of sending out an email addressed top me, Delta just as easily could have done and connected with many more “Valued Customer.”
In order to do this, Delta would need to weigh the benefits of communicating with its customers one-to-one (email is still sent in mass, but customized to each recipient) versus the investment they’d need to make in technology (computer software) and training staff to use. (more…)
Build Database and Offer Purchase Incentive
June 20th 2007
Office Depot, which sponsors Nextel Cup driver Carl Edwards and his No. 99 Office Depot Ford Fusion, has created an “enter to win” contest where fans have an opportunity to visit Office Depot and enter for a chance to win an autographed Carl Edwards helmet.
Enter to win contests have traditionally been a solid strategy for building a database, but in an effort to ensure store foot traffic and revenues increase, Office Depot is providing fans with $10 off each $25 or more purchase when they visit Office Depot. (more…)
Offer Complimentary Shuttle Service
June 19th 2007
If fans have to walk a long distance to your arena or your stadium, why not offer complimentary shuttle service?
I know some professional sports teams do offer complimentary shuttle service to and from the arena, but I believe complimentary shuttle service is more rare than it is common with college athletics events. (more…)
Cross-Promote With Other Sports
June 18th 2007
While scanning through the TV stations during a Florida trip last week, I came across a news station reporting a cross-promotion between the Orlando Magic and the Pepsi 400, a Nextel Cup race that will be hosted July 7 at the Daytona International Speedway.
The promotion, a game of H-O-R-S-E between Magic guard J.J. Redick and veteran Nextel Cup driver Jeff Burton, is a great example of opportunities sports teams have to work together in an effort to promote one another and generate media coverage. (more…)

Our kids received a Ron Jon Surf Shop sticker when they visited the Cocoa Beach shop and this is what the back of the sticker states:
“Congratulations! You are now the proud owner of a Ron Jon Sticker. The coolest and most recognized sticker on the planet. The Ron Jon Sticker won’t make your car get better gas mileage but it will say something about who you are and how you live your life. So stick it on. Enjoy it! Be sure to honk and give a friendly wave the next time you see someone with a Ron Jon Sticker on their car, RV, moped, motorcycle or riding lawnmower!” (more…)

Hit this Sign and Win a New Suit
June 11th 2007
The whole ‘hit the sign’ trend began at historic Ebbets Field in Brooklyn and here’s a tribute I came across – “Hit This Sign & Win a New Suit” – that just may get you thinking about how to implement your own “Hit Sign, Win Suit” promotion.”

New and Unique Halftime Entertainment
June 7th 2007
Are you looking for a new and unique halftime show that likely many of your fans have not experienced? Check out The Peking Acrobats, who are said to be “Daring, daunting and downright fun” with their balancing act on chairs, defying gravity routine on a high-wire, and then twisting their bodies into amazing contortions.
I don’t know if they’ve ever performed at a college or professional sports event, but if not, maybe your sporting event could be their first!

Offer Early Bird Ticket Special
June 6th 2007
I like the Early Bird ticket special strategy, and Tulane athletics recently implemented its Season Ticket Early Bird Special for Green Wave season ticket holders who renew by the Early Bird deadline.
It’s a great way to reward your season ticket holders for their loyalty and early commitment to investing in season tickets, and a great way to get an early jump on full season ticket sales for the 2007 football season – or any sports season in 2007-08.

Why I Like You
June 4th 2007
Zig Ziglar conducts a “Born to Win” seminar where I’ve been informed Zig asks participants to recognize each by pairing up and completing the statement, “I like you because…”
This is a great exercise for showing people we care and appreciate them, and I would encourage you to find a way to incorporate something similar into one of your upcoming staff meetings.

Salute to Indoor Plumbing
June 1st 2007
The West Virginia Power baseball team held a “Salute to Indoor Plumbing Night” last week. I’m not recommending sports teams create their a salute to one of the greatest inventions, but I would recommend another tribute the Power will host on August 13, which is a “Celebration of Bowling Night.”
With over 70,000 bowlers in the U.S., this could turn out to be a popular event for the Power as well as other sports teams who choose to host a similar tribute to bowlers.
