Unique Strategies for Armed Forces Nights

January 7th 2008

Q. I’m sure you’re familiar with the many armed forces appreciation events that sports teams conduct each year. Could you share any new or creative strategies we may be able to implement with our annual “Armed Forces Appreciation Night” that we conduct annually?

A. There are two neat strategies that come to mind.  The first is the Dallas Maverick’s annual “Seats for Soldiers” game where each of the front row seats is donated to military personnel by season ticket holders.

It’s a great program that you can read more about here.

The second creative strategy to honor and recognize military is one conducted by the Dayton Dragons called “Military Milestone Night” where as a part of their “Hometown Heroes Program,” the Dragons host a pre-game dinner for service men and women who missed special family holidays, birthdays and other milestones while deployed overseas.

Dragon coaches and players visit and greet the military personnel and their families during the pre-game dinner, and each of the military and their families are able to celebrate their missed milestone at the Dragons game.

In addition, the military honorees are recognized at the Dragons game for their service during an inning break.
