Transitioning from Assistant to Director

March 29th 2007

Q. How do you know when the time is right to make the transition from assistant director to director?

A. Great question and I’m sure the time is right at different times for different people. I believe you can put yourself in a great position to be elevated from an assistant director to a director when you make the decision to work with a director who you’re confident will be a great mentor to you as an assistant director.

The next steps are having an excellent attitude and work ethic; learning all you can and passing that knowledge and experience on to others so you develop a strong business team while learning first-hand how to mentor and coach others; and have a passion and desire to be the very best.

Some great advice I was provided early in my career was to never worry about my next job, but to always focus 100 percent of my energies on being successful in my current job.  If I did that, being promoted would eventually happen as a result of me successfully executing my responsibilities today.
