Student Cheer Section

September 17th 2007

Q. We would like to create a student section at our athletic events that are active as the Cameron Crazies and create that “home court” and “home field” advantage for our teams. Besides Duke and their Cameron Crazies, what schools have created successful student cheer sections that we could model some strategies after to create a successful student section?

A. There’s no question Duke has created one of the most active and energetic student cheer sections in the country.

In football, Texas A&M’s Yell Leaders – officially called the “Fighting Texas Aggie Yell Leaders – are five students elected by the students every year to lead the Aggie fans in “yells” – not cheers, but “yells” – during athletic events. This is a special tradition that would be beneficial to any school to take a close look at and model their best practices.
