Sports Management Degree Versus MBA

April 4th 2007

Q. Do you recommend receiving an MBA or a Master’s in Sports Management? I have heard positive things about both, and was wondering if you could give me a little more insight into the pros and cons of both?

A. Great question and I believe the answer depends on the schools you’re considering and the curriculums, as well as how those classes and requirements match up with what you would like to do in sports. One thing you may want to think about is an MBA may be more universal compared to the sports management programs. If you ever choose to work outside of sports, your MBA would be valuable to have and likely make you more marketable.

Also, you likely would have the opportunity to serve as an athletics department graduate assistant while pursuing your MBA, so you could also receive the hands-on experience you desire while earning your MBA.
