Pom Poms, Rally Towels or Bangers

May 30th 2007

Q. I was watching the Pistons-Cavs NBA Playoff game this past weekend and couldn’t help but notice the rally towels all the fans were waving. We have not used rally towels – only pom poms and bangers. Are rally towels making a comeback, and of the three, which do you feel are the most effective for exciting fans and distracting opponents?

A. I’m not sure if rally towels are making a comeback, but they’ve been popular for quite some time with the Minnesota Twins and its Homer Hanky as well as the Pittsburgh Steelers and its Terrible Towel.

As for which I prefer, I like all three of them for different reasons, and believe it also depends on the sport or event you use them. Rally towels work well in basketball, but I don’t believe a lot of basketball teams offer a rally towel to its fans like football has over the years.

The three keys to any of these three being effective atmosphere enhancers, though, is how many you distribute to fans, how they are distributed, and how you prompt fans to use them.

To create the greatest visual effect, it’s best to distribute to the entire lower bowl of your arena or stadium, and I encourage you to make the extra effort to place on the seats versus distributing at the doors to fans. You likely will find that more fans will use the pom poms, thunder sticks and/or rally towels when distributed on the seats.
