Taking a Break from Parenthood

June 19th 2007

My wife and I went on a weekend trip to celebrate our anniversary, and it’s one of very few trips over the years that we’ve taken without our kids.

It was awesome!

Although we thoroughly enjoyed the quality one-on-one time together, a day didn’t go by that we didn’t reference each of our three kids at some point each day. So although they were “out of sight,” our kids certainly weren’t “out of mind.”

A few weeks later, though, we were on a family vacation – all five of us – and the kids enjoyed time at the beach, at the amusement parks, and played well for the most part.

There were a few moments, though, when the kids didn’t get along or listen as well as they should, and Susie and I just looked at each other, and without saying a word, we each knew what the other was asking ourselves, “Do we really need to wait until our next anniversary for our next quiet one-on-one weekend trip?”
