It’s hard for me to believe it’s been 20 years since the University of Tennessee women’s basketball team won its first National Championship in women’s basketball back in 1987, and it’s equally hard for me to believe Pat Summitt has been coaching for 33 seasons.

As they say, time flies when you’re having fun, and the Lady Vols and their fans had a whole lot of fun last night, as the Lady Vols earned its seventh National Championship in Cleveland.

The year following the Lady Vols first National Championship, I arrived on the UT campus in Knoxville to be a graduate assistant in the women’s athletics department, and it was during my second year the Lady Vols won their second National Championship.

I returned to Knoxville for a second time to work at UT during the 1996-97, and just like my first trip to Knoxville, the Lady Vols had won a National Championship (their fourth) the year before.  The Lady Vols went on to win their fifth National Title in ’97, and then won their third consecutive – and sixth overall – championship in 1998…which incidentally was the same year the Vol football team won its National Championship.

Nine long years have passed since that ’98 title, so when Coach Summitt and the Tennessee Lady Vols won their seventh title and the confetti fluttered from the rafters; it brought back many great memories of past National Championship celebrations and many wonderful people – including Coach Summitt – and student-athletes I had the pleasure to work with during my time in Tennessee.
